Defendants in India's GSM Scandal Fail to Appear in Court

By: Simon Davies |

Four investors in Indian mobile networks failed to attend court today as part of the investigation into the 2008 GSM license scandal, all claiming, via lawyers that the court summons had not been correctly issued.

The promoters of Essar group and Loop Telecom -- Anshuman and Ravi Ruia and I P Khaitan and Kiran Khaitan respectively separately sought a one-month delay in the summons.

The defense lawyers argued that pasting the summons notices on their residences in Mumbai and Delhi were not served correctly, as the defendants were in Dubai at the time.

The prosecutor claimed that the four were trying to seek a delay in the proceedings by not appearing, having previously failed to secure a delay at the Delhi High Court.

They got their delay though, the next hearing was set for the 22nd February.
